Happy Birthday SOPHIE!!
Although I’m still speechless from the game, I just want to share my experience at the game on Sunday:
Before the gates opened a few canWNT fans, including myself, gathered by the gates where the teams entered the building, after a few false alarms [charter buses that we thought were the team] the stars of the day arrived. The doors of the bus opened up and the first person to emerge from the bus was none other than the man himself John Herdman. The uproar of cheers and “GO CANADA” chants that erupted was something that’s indescribable! Following John and the training staff, out came the players. Cheers of “Beat the USA” & “We love you CANADA” & “Welcome Home, Ladies” from the crowd seemed to have put the biggest smiles on the team’s faces. The team then proceeded to stick out their hands and hi-five fans on both sides of the gates, then Melissa Tancredi, Christine Sinclair & Sophie Schmidt walked off the bus and well, it was like a Justin Bieber concert, little girls screaming “WE LOVE YOU SINCY!!”, and people yelling “WELCOME BACK TANC, WE MISSED YOU” and there was Sophie just being Sophie when a Canadian fan yelled out “WE WANT A SOPHIE MOMENT” she laughed and went in. Then about 5 minutes after Canada entered the building came team USA, there were cheers, & boo’s, but the 2 most breathtaking moments [in a good way] was when Abby Wambach walked off the bus, a hand full of canWNT fans yelled out “Happy Birthday Abby”, & when Sydney Leroux walked off the bus, again a hand full of canWNT fans yelled “Welcome Home Syd, Good Luck”. After the doors closed everyone flooded to the gates to enter BMO field.
Now, I have never had the pleasure of watching a National team game live so I didn’t know what to expect when I entered the stadium to take my seat. The atmosphere at BMO Field even before the team’s began to warm up was incredible. The US came to warm up first and there were some cheers from US fans. Then the Canadians walked out, well KK & Erin, and BMO erupted in “LET’S GO CANADA”, while we were still cheering for KK & Erin, out come’s Canada, at that moment everyone that was sitting just stood up and just cheered and the team paused acknowledged the crowd and proceeded into the team huddle & then warmed up. After warm-up’s and the 2014 U-20 WWC logo unveiling, IT WAS TIME FOR THE ANTHEMS: The Star Spangled banner was sung, and a round of applause was given and well then it was time for O Canada, it was loud & VERY PATRIOTIC, Singing O Canada with 20,000+ was jaw-dropping. Then it was time for kick-off, and the Voyagers DIDN’T disappoint AT ALL during the game. The crowd, aside from the South End, was something else, I was surrounded by Canadian fans, and yes some US fans as well. There was some friendly jarring back and forth between both fans during the game, but there was a mutual respect between both sides. All in all it was a great game surrounded by an even more amazing atmosphere. After the game we found Mel Booth took a picture and talked for a bit, and then proceeded to the gate where the teams were leaving. I want to thank you the Canadian Women’s Soccer Team for taking time after the game to sign autographs, take pictures & talk to all of the canWNT fans that were there, myself included, even though the announcer at the game said that there “will be no autographs or pictures due to safety concerns”.
Sorry that the story is so long but this is just what happened in a BRIEF summary.
I seriously don’t know what to make of it.
What do YOU think? Do you think she will be able to play come June 2nd?
